During the visits in the early 1970's a 5-cm diameter Livingstone borer proved unsuitable and a Thomas-Farnell modified Hiller borer and a 5-cm Russian borer were used. In 1983 an 8-cm Russian corer was used to obtain samples to a depth of 820 cm.
