The sediment is annually laminated from 186 cm to the top. The remaining 187-356 cm are not laminated due to the geological history of the lake, i.e. the lake was part of the ancient Lake Saimaa until 5000 BP, when a new outlet opened to Lake Ladoga and the water levels lowered considerably.
